Background:
Several large antitrust bills just passed committee to be debated in the judiciary committee.
Many of the bills would fundamentally alter the way big tech tools are used, including Google, Amazon, and Facebook.
I am currently viewing a panel from Connected Commerce Council. They are against these antitrust bills. The businesses that are represented on the panel all rely solely on search engines.
Pay attention Locals, this may be a boon for you.
Current takeaways:
-Antitrust laws may be what we need right now. But the trade off will be many businesses suffering because digital marketing products will suddenly cost a lot more.
-This whole online conference feels very manipulative
Here is what the laws will do:
Google will not be allowed to promote it's own products above any competitors on their own platform. So, goodbye Google business listings, Google map locations, Google map integrations, and hello higher ad prices.
Google would no longer be allowed to rank its company's content first: i.e. YouTube videos would rank organically rather tha on top always.
Amazon Marketplace will take a much bigger cut and will not be allowed to showcase third party sellers products through Marketplace, i.e. Amazon published authors and the lot.
-Data would be protected, so no more targeted ads
-Would force a break up of the behemoths. So, Facebook and Instagram would become separate companies, Amazon and Amazon Marketplace could become separate businesses.
Final thoughts:
As a Libertarian, I'm suspicious of all forms of regulation. But given the last few years, it is clear that the mass collection of data puts American people at risk. It is also clear that these companies have become too powerful, having grown into nations within a nation without the oversight of elections or law, with the ability to buy off whomever.
The passage of the antitrust laws would cause a lot of upset in certain industries, but not unlike what happened when Google first appeared on the scene, other industries would form.
Who knows the untold number of businesses that may be an improvement on Google that are being suppressed by the tech giant. The same goes for Facebook and Amazon.
Market competition benefits the whole.
